The Long Table: Dinner, with a difference.

In a world where we have never had more ways to connect, so many of us are still craving something a little more real. A good conversation, a reason to head out, an opportunity to connect with those outside of our usual circles.

That is the beauty of The Long Table.  It is dinner, with a difference.

Twenty people gather around one table for an evening of good food, conversation, and the unknown magic of what can happen when a whole mix of humans sit down together.

No name badges, no awkward icebreaker games,no pressure to perform, be on, or make a whole load of new friends.

Just a warm welcome, a beautiful meal, and a seat at the table.

A night outside your usual circle

As we move through life, we can find that we move in the same circles, same or similar conversations, routines, familiar faces.

There is nothing wrong with this, and I am very grateful for mine, and feel it really has taken me a while to build. But what I am finding, is there is also something really special about stepping slightly outside of the usual and being open to who, or what, might be waiting there.

I am a big fan of small steps outside the comfort zone through small everyday adventures and opportunities, and am now seeing that connecting can be one of those adventures, we never know where it might lead to…

The Long Table is for anyone who wants to widen their circle or just take a courageous step and see what happens

Maybe you are keen to meet new friends, maybe you are keen for different conversation, maybe you have lived here for years but keep seeing the same faces, maybe you are new to the area, maybe you just like the idea of doing something a little unexpected on a Wednesday night.

You can come on your own, bring a friend, or bring your partner. You do not need to know anyone already. You just need to come as you are.

There will be a seat waiting for you.

The unknown is part of the magic

One of my favourite things about these gatherings is that we genuinely do not know exactly what will happen and I really see that as part of the magic.

Sure we know the timings, the menu, who’s coming etc, but the connections, that is the unknown…

You might meet someone fascinating, you might hear a story that stays with you, you might gain a piece of inspiration, a great local tip, or a new perspective.

You might laugh more than you expected, you might find common ground with someone you never would have thought to talk to.

Or you might simply head home thinking, that was different, I’m really glad I went.

At our last dinner, I ended up sitting next to someone who had grown up ten minutes up the road from me in the UK. Someone else found themselves sitting beside the brother of a friend they had spent childhood holidays with.

These are the little moments you cannot plan. The funny little threads that remind us how connected we often are, even before we realise it. That is what I love about this kind of gathering.

It creates space for the golden thread of connection to do its thing.

More than a meal

Of course, The Long Table is a chance to enjoy delicious food and good company.

But it is also an invitation to slow down, to be present, to put your phone down for a while and be in the room.

Because we can spend so much of life moving quickly, from work to home, from one commitment to the next, always meaning to catch up with people ‘soon.’

The Long Table offers a gentle interruption to that rhythm – a chance to pause, to gather, an opportunity to sit across from someone you may never have met otherwise and simply have a conversation.

Connection does not always need to be complicated. Sometimes it begins by pulling out a chair.

The buzz around the table

Recently, I hosted a dinner at home and a friend turned to me and said, “Liz, will you please pipe down and let the rest of us get a word in!”

She was, of course, having me on, because I was barely saying a word. Partly because I was quietly celebrating the fact that, as someone who has not always felt confident in the kitchen, I had somehow pulled this dinner together out of nowhere, at short notice, and everything was ready at the same time!

But mostly because I was in my happy place. I had created a slightly random opportunity for people to come together, and I was just sitting there soaking up the buzz.

The laughter, the conversation, the little pockets of connection, the feeling of people relaxing into the room.

That is what The Long Table is also about, creating the opportunity for people to gather, and then letting the magic unfold from there.

A table with purpose

Every Long Table Event raises funds for Taranaki Retreat.

So while you are enjoying a beautiful evening around the table, you are also helping us continue to weave that golden thread of connection through our wider community. Your seat at the table helps create space for more support, more belonging, and more community care.

That makes this more than just a dinner. It is community in action. A shared meal can become a way to give back, a conversation can ripple further than the room, a simple night out can help support something much bigger.

And if you feel called to, you can also Pay It Forward and gift a seat to someone else in the community. A simple act of generosity that helps widen the circle and make the table more available for others too.

Come as you are

So whether you come on your own, bring a friend, bring your partner, use it as the long-promised catch up you keep meaning to organise, or simply come because you are curious about who you might meet.

There will be delicious food, a great setting, and many courageous others who are also keen to connect!

One table – A whole mix of humans – Something different.

So, the question is…

Who haven’t you met yet?

I would love to welcome you to the next Long Table !
